Physiotherapy and taping: what is the point?

As Physiotherapists we use taping to help with pain, injury and injury prevention in many ways.

There are several types of tape; from the coloured, stretchy Kinesio-Tape to the brown rigid sports tape -they are used for different reasons and in different ways.

Here are a couple of things you may not have considered previously.

Posture: Often helping to support the body in a better resting position is enough to reduce pain. Taping our clients to be in an improved alignment position can substantially help reduce pain and therefore improve function and performance.

Muscle strains: Tape can be used to reduce stress over an injured area in a way that reinforces the muscle, allowing our athletes or active clients to keep moving.

Reinforcing what the physio does within treatment: If we can do certain things in treatment that help to reduce pain, we can often use tape to replicate what we did. This allows the results of treatment to last longer.

For support: There are so many ways we can use tape to support an injured area, possibly sometimes blocking movement so you can’t stretch into a position that may hurt, or using the tape to support you when you do.

At Embody Movement we will often see clients before a match or race purely to tape them in a way that we have figured out helps. Want to know more? Feel free to contact us at any time on 07 5337 9853
