Nervous about trying remedial massage? We answer all of your questions!

What to expect from a massage

When you arrive for your first massage with Embody Movement, you will need to complete an information form. You will then be introduced to your massage therapist who will invite you into the massage room. You will be asked about any specific areas of pain and the type of massage you’d like. We have a range of massage options (see below).

You will be provided with a towel and your therapist will leave the room for a few minutes while you undress to your underwear. Lay on your stomach and drape the towel over yourself. The therapist will gently knock on the door to see if you’re ready to start your treatment.

If it’s the first time you’ve booked a massage, no doubt you’ll have some questions! Below, we answer some common questions about remedial massage.

Do I have to have an injury to come in for a remedial massage?

Remedial massage is a treatment massage, so it depends on what you need. Some people book regular massages to aid in stress relief and to reduce the frequency of symptoms associated with muscle tightness (such as pain, headaches or cramps). Others come for treatment to specifically address an injury of area of pain. Or it can be simply to relax and unwind. It is up to you- we have treated all sorts of injuries, pains and bodies! However, it’s essential to tell your therapist if you have any injury.

Do you focus on one area or will it be my whole body?

This depends on what you need and the session period (30 minutes, 60 minutes or 90 minutes).

  • 30-minute massage is normally half of the body (for example your neck and shoulders)

  • 60-minute massage is normally for the whole body but we will concentrate on the tight areas.

Some people request feet to be included specifically (or not!)

Do I need to undress completely?

Dry massage: You can keep your clothes on. But if you’re comfortable with it, we suggest that it can feel more relaxing if you remove clothing and leave only underwear on.

Oil massage: You need to take all of your clothes off including bra but can keep underpants on. You will have privacy getting undressed and ready on the treatment bed and a towel is supplied to drape over you.

Will the massage hurt?

The pressure that we use throughout the treatment depends on the type of massage you have and your tolerance for touch. We ask how the pressure feels throughout the massage, so if you feel uncomfortable, or want heavier pressure- just ask.

Relaxation massage: Does not hurt at all. The massage is gentle and rhythmic for relaxation purposes.

Deep tissue and remedial massage: you may get a sore feeling when massaging target spots but that often feels good when you have pain in the area.

Do I have to talk or converse with the therapist during the massage?

It is not necessary to talk with the therapist, only if you want to change the pressure or change your posture. Feel welcome to engage in conversation if you wish.

We have dimmed lights and music playing to promote relaxation- this is your time to relax!

What if I can’t lie on my stomach or in certain position?

No problem! You can lie down on your side or your back.

Can I have a massage if I am pregnant?

Less than 3 months: not recommended for remedial massage (relaxation massage is fine).

Over 3 months: massage is safe and recommended. It can help to reduce the pressure, reduce risk of injury and muscle tension and improve the quality of your sleep.

A little about our massage options…

Our therapists use different techniques in their treatment, including rremedial massage, trigger point release, scraping, stretching, deep tissue massage, cupping or mobilisations.
