What is Pilates?
Pilates is a form of exercise that is designed to promote movement efficiency. Based on a foundation of mindful movement developed by Joseph Pilates, also known as “Contrology”, Clinical Pilates offers a form of exercise suitable for all ages and abilities, injuries, chronic conditions and general health and well-being.
As quoted by Joseph Pilates himself “Pilates is complete coordination of body, mind and spirit.”
Many Physiotherapists now widely use Pilates as an enjoyable and effective way to prevent and rehabilitate from injury. It emphasises spinal and pelvic alignment, normal breathing control, and developing a strong core or centre (toning the abdominals while strengthening the back), as well as improving coordination and balance.

How Pilates benefits your body
Pilates caters to a wide range of people with varying abilities and different conditions. The springs utilised on the equipment support the body, providing safe and targeted exercise.
The exercises and resistance can be modified to allow for a range of difficulty, and can be progressed to facilitate the needs of each person’s body as they improve. Our pilates sessions are designed to provide a way of stepping safely from physiotherapy rehabilitation to general exercise.
Pilates is great for overall strengthening of the body and highly effective when used for specific rehabilitation of injuries and conditions. This form of exercise benefits you by helping to tone and strengthen your body through the use of resistance from springs, bands and small weights, as well as your own body weight.
“Change happens through movement and movement heals.”
- Joseph Pilates
Who can do Pilates?
Just about anyone can learn Pilates! Our classes are a safe form of exercise for people of any age or body type, male or female, as programs are individually tailored to your body and its specific needs.
Embody Movement Sunshine Coast Pilates classes are particularly beneficial for :
people who suffer from osteoporosis or osteoarthritis
pregnant women
women recovering from breast cancer surgery
people with back and knee injuries; and
many other specific conditions.
For the sports minded, this form of exercise is a great way of helping to strengthen and improve general condition and performance as a golfer, cyclist, swimmer, runner or other sports pursuit. It does this through improving your balance in movement, correcting body alignment, trunk stability, movement and muscle firing patterns, strength and flexibility.

What’s the difference between reformer Pilates and Studio Pilates?
Many studios offer reformer classes that only use the reformer machine. These reformer classes typically take a larger number of clients through a set series of reformer exercises.
However, the reformer is just one of a wide variety of machines available. At Embody Movement, our studio classes use a wide array of equipment, with no more than three clients each doing exercises personalised to them. Our Pilates teachers understand the human body, injury and movement biomechanics. We can work with any injury at any stage of someone’s recovery.
